Microsoft is working on a new file sharing interface for OneDrive, coming this summer

At the Build 2017 event last week, Microsoft announced that OneDrive's placeholder files will be making a comeback as Files On-Demand with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update this autumn.

Now, at its SharePoint Virtual Summit, the company announced that it is also working on a new file sharing interface for the web, File Explorer on PCs, and Finder on Macs.

Jeff Teper, corporate vice president for OneDrive, SharePoint and Office, stated that starting this summer, users will soon be able to right-click on a file on their machine and be able to share files directly with others. This will be done via the new "Share" option, which will also allow you to modify access permissions to the file. This sharing experience will be similar across multiple platforms, including Windows 10, Windows 7, and Mac.

Additionally, Microsoft also shared interesting stats regarding SharePoint, saying that the application plays a major role in the growth of Office 365. The company also highlighted increasing momentum for SharePoint adoption with the following stats:

  • More than 250,000 organizations and over 85 percent of Fortune 500 companies now have SharePoint as part of Office 365.
  • In the last year, usage of SharePoint has grown 90 percent, content stored has grown 300 percent and more than 10 million new SharePoint sites have been created.
  • More than 60 percent of SharePoint seats are now online, reflecting the value customers see with SharePoint in Office 365.

Microsoft announced communication sites for SharePoint as well. These can be created in seconds and provide a beautiful and easy-to-use experience, allowing you to reach a wider audience.

It also stated that starting this summer, organizations will be able to create custom SharePoint forms using Microsoft PowerApps. It went on to say that:

We also continue to deepen integration of SharePoint and Microsoft Flow. New built-in approval flows let you send any document for approval with a custom message. The recipient can approve the request directly from a rich, actionable email message, so approval and feedback can be given without leaving your inbox.

Microsoft announced a more powerful and personalized search system for Office 365 customers. Now, whenever you search, people with skills, interests, and projects relevant to your query will show up in the results too.

However, as Microsoft has pointed out, these are just headlines from its event, and if you want to more detailed information, you should check out the recording of its SharePoint Virtual Summit.
