Twitter announced today a new experimental feature that allows you to make a voice recording and add that to your tweet. The new capability is rolling out starting today to iOS users only, comprising a limited group of people.
To access the feature, start composing a tweet and tap the new wavelength icon that will appear beside the camera icon at the bottom of the composer. However, you will be allowed to record only up to 140 seconds of audio. There's a method, though, of creating more voice tweets if necessary.
Twitter's Maya Patterson (Staff Product Designer) and Rémy Bourgoin (Senior Software Engineer) wrote in a blog post:
"Have more to say? Keep talking. Once you reach the time limit for a Tweet, a new voice Tweet starts automatically to create a thread. Once you’re done, tap the Done button to end your recording and go back to the composer screen to Tweet."
The audio recording will show up on your timeline with your profile photo as its background picture, visible to audiences based on your privacy settings. Tapping on that image will play the recording in a new window docked at the bottom of your timeline. It will be available for listening even as you scroll or switch to other tasks on your device.
In the coming weeks, Twitter will roll out that capability to everyone on iOS, along with the option for others to respond to voice tweets. The micro-blogging site says the goal is to "create a more human experience for listeners and storytellers alike."
