Finding the best Blu Ray player for 150 dollars. 1 2
by Colin.B- 49 replies

So my father just upgraded to the wonderful world of LCD. However he has no hi-def cable box or blu ray player. He's not a man that's good with his money so he's looking at a blu ray player in the 150 dollar price range. I've found a lot of different models and a lot of different reviews and I've narrowed my selection down to a few. I was wondering if I could get some input. He's in Canada but a long haul truck driver so picking something up from Best Buy in the U.S is entirely possible. Amazon is out of the question as he doesn't have a computer. Hi guys, Finally got hold of the boxee media center last night and tell you what think it's the best thing since slice bread, so much so I'm looking at making my soon to be redudant server into a media center. However I'm starting to be very weary that it'll not hold up too much. So I ask you guys would MSI Axis 700 (http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=134&prod_no=1100) hold it's own when converted to a media center? I have put in a 500gig sata HDD, and 2 gig ram, but clocked at 1 gig as that the max it can handle. I'll be connecting the media center pc to tv by VGA aswell. and I'm looking at having movies on there and maybe hd movies aswell.…

Weird Colours on Some DVDs?
by Sir Topham Hatt- 10 replies
- 1.9k views
Hello! So, I was watching a DVD the other day when I noticed the colours were weird: 10 Things I Hate About You This DVD seemed to have lost some red. Some peoples lips were orange :s The person I was watching it with said the ground which was red, was supposed to be green. Apparently, the colours were very vivid and bright, this was evedent as some of the white colours were completly washed out. I half fixed this changing the TV colour to "Movie". Dead Silence This film seemed to have a blue wash all over it. In every scene, the colours looked very blue. The Illusionist Orange with this one. The whole film seemed to have an orange wash over it. I did check …

PS3 and Coaxial input
by +Audioboxer- 14 replies

Question for you guys, my parents took my old PS3 when I got my Slim and I currently have a good sound system, supports 5.1/DTS/PCM over HDMI, the lot. Now we both want to stream movies but the issue is the way I have PS3 Media Server setup is to stream DTS tracks, as I can hear them obviously. Through a normal TV it just produces static. Their home theatre setup was an all in one chucked in with the TV, it has HDMI but only for video, no optical port as far as I can see but it does have a Coaxial port and on the System itself it says it does supports DTS, the branding and logo for DTS are there. So does Coaxial do DTS, and if so, how do I go about taking an optical c…

HDTV Restarting Randomly
by Redestium- 9 replies

I recently bought a 52 inch Sony Bravia Z series HDTV a month ago, and about a week ago I started to notice an unusual behavior. While playing my PS3 (using HDMI) all of a sudden after hours of play the sound would cut out and about 10 seconds after that the TV would turn off and then back on--all the while the game is still running and playable. It's really hard to reproduce but I've only noticed it happen while playing my PS3, my Satellite DVR (HDMI) and Wii (component) run fine and seemingly don't cause this problem. I have had this happen 3 times and I can't find the cause. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything like this.

Soundbar Suggestions
by lawtai- 13 replies
- 3.3k views
I've been looking into getting a sound bar since I don't want to have to deal with running wires around my living room. I have a 40" Samsung LCD tv, and was looking at getting the Sony HTCT100 soundbar. It's gotten decent reviews for what it comes with at the price ~$200. Also saw the newer version the HTCT500 on Amazon which has also gotten good reviews from the few users who've bought it. I can't remember the exact dimensions of my room, but my tv is in the corner of the room facing out. Seating is from a sectional that's basically at the other corner of the room. I'd be hooking up an Xbox360 and the DVR. Anyone have any suggestions for something? I wouldn't want to s…

Surround sound help

Hi guys, Merry Christmas and all that - just looking for some help and advice for connecting a surround sound system to the TV. We have an entry level surround sound system so it doesn't have many useful connections on the back - fine for connecting to a computer's sound card but doens't seem to be easy to connect to the TV. Above is a picture of the rear of the surround sound unit (5.1) There is not audio output on the TV other than headphone and the freebox has nothing but scart. What would be the best way to connect the surround sound system so that it can be used on the freeview box? My current line of research was to use a scart to phono cable and then use som…

http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/artic...-to-buy-in-2010 In this Yahoo article, provided by SmartMoney.com, DVDs are listed as one of the things you shouldn't buy this year because it may become obsolete very soon. I wonder if Blu-ray is the main reason for it's decline in sales. Probably is because I haven't bought many DVDs since I got my Blu-ray player 6 months ago. I only bought a couple, which happened to be classic shows that aren't on Blu-ray and probably never will be. But other than that, I've mainly bought BDs.

Speaker/Receiver suggestion?
by lawtai- 0 replies
- 1.3k views
So for my living room, I was originally looking at a soundbar, but I've seen comments about how it'd be better to go with something like a 2.1/3.1 speaker setup as it would allow me to grow in the future if I wanted to take advantage of surround sound. I was wondering if anyone had any good speaker/receiver suggestions? Since my TV is in the corner of the room, I was looking at floor standing speakers, or speakers that I can put on a stand that don't take up too much space. I've seen lots of stuff for Polk speakers, but wanted to get some more opinions.

Maybe a noob question
by Imnotrichey- 1 reply

So I just picked up a Blu Ray and am soon going to be getting a CT100 (very small room) to go with our HDTV. From what I read the best way to go is : 1a HDMI out from the blu ray to HDMI in on CT100 1b HDMI out from HDTV Cable Box/DVR to HDMI in on CT100 2. HDMI out from CT100 to HDMI in on HDTV so my questions are 1. is this the best way to do it? Or should i be using digital out ? 2. my main question is how does the tv then know you are using the bluray or the Cable Box. Like right now, without the soundbar I have the DVR going into HDMI 1 and the blu ray going into HDMI 2 so I just switch the inputs. But if they are all going in through HDMI 1 on the TV, h…

Need Audio Streamer!
by Purple Haze- 3 replies

Ok, I need a new MP3 streamer - Soundbridge M500 died. I don't care about video, and I won't use my TV as a screen for it - I like to listen to music while watching/playing games/etc. It MUST have a screen on the base unit, or it's crap. Screen on the remote isn't ideal, either - remotes get scuffed/broken/lost. Options I've looked at more than one second: Dune HD Base (looks good but hard to find info that isn't in Russian) Squeezebox Duet (aforementioned remote screen issue.....if the screen were on the base, I'd be sold) Another Soundbridge (discontinued/don't like bidding over retail price on eBay) HTPC/Laptop as player (power/noise concerns; though I DO have …

How to Watch HD Content
by Sir Topham Hatt- 5 replies
- 1.2k views
So I was reading today about HD and Bluray and have a few questions. Can I Play HD Content from a DVD? What About Bluray Content? I tried making a mini-DVD and burning it to a CD once. I am sure it played fine, although I can't quite remember the actual outcome. But yes, is it possible to burn a mini Bluray disc on an actual DVD disc and it would play alright? M2TS and MKV's I have seen a lot of HD content tend to be an MKV file. This is alright, but can DVD players play the MKV alone? I am certain my current DVD player can play a single VOB file without any other information. What are M2TS files? Can they be played as a stand alone file on a player? Also, to …

I bought this TV for my bedroom about 4 months ago. Some DVD's are difficult to play, I thought it was just down to scratches and the DVD player being vertical and not focusing right. But, we tried a brand new DVD, straight out the box. I get through the "Piracey" clips but then the main screen won't load, it just sounds as it the laser is moving about and can't read the disk. The DVD works fin on my PC and PS3. Is there something I can do, or RMA it?

Looking for a inexpensive possibly used receiver
by Master Shake- 10 replies

I have been wanting to get some kind of surround setup for some time now, I hate the crap speakers on my 60" mitsu and my old receiver barely works anymore. I thought about going with a soundbar to save space and money but that really wouldn't do my ps3 and bluray any justice nor my 60" 1080p tv. instead of spending the $200-300 on a soundbar or cheap system I thought I mine as well add to what I have. I currently have a very nice pair of cherry Acoustic Research 303 speakers, they are very nice and are a 3-way speaker with a 12" woofer, they sound amazing and have very warm sound with a nice tight low end. I would hate to trade these beautiful sounding speakers for a…

So I don't know crap about home audio. Let me just get that out of the way. All I know is I want surround sound, I want it loud, and I want it to be clear as I can get it for the budget I have in mind which is about 200-300 dollars. I mean, I know the basics - I know that DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD sound nice and I know you can get wireless set ups. But outside of that I don't know much. I have a Sony PS3 hooked up through HDMI which is my primary movie watching unit, an X-BOX 360 connected through component cables and a 42" Vizio T.V hooked up to the cable box via HDMI. The t.v isn't all that high end but it works for what I need and has 2 HDMI ports. (I don't even know if …

Backlight leakage

With all these new technologies, with LED, and thinner LCD TV's, I was wondering if the startup problems are still around, such as Backlight leakage and not being able to project a true black, is still common in HDTV's? I haven't heard too much about these problems lately and was curious if these still exist in new HDTV sets?

New home ideas
by notta- 0 replies

Guys, I just purchased my first home and was looking for some ideas to get started. I remember when I was dating this girl her father had speakers mounted in the corners of almost every room in the house. I remember that it sounded fantastic and I always said I wanted to do that to my own house. So, the time has come. I'm in the process of gutting some rooms so I want to run any wiring I need to run before I finish the walls. I'm sure some of you guys have done this so I'd appreciate any tips you might have for me.

HDTV HDMI
by Skulltrail- 1 reply

So I've got a Proscan 32" 720p (which magically supports 1080i) and have hooked up my Xbox 360 and cable TV receiver via component. But from experience HDMI is MUCH better both performance-wise and quality-wise. However, I'm new to the HDMI industry so I ask the Neowinian community. Does it matter if the HDMI cabling is gold-plated? Sure, gold has better conductibility and although when talking about electricity gold is superb, but digitally, is it? I've found a 6ft HDMI (silver plating) for 1 cent plus 3.99 shipping (which is still cheap altogether). Then there's another one that says gold-plated for $1 more. Should I pick the more expensive one? ALSO: <IRRELEVANT&g…
