Which are better tv's overall, LCD, LED, or Plasma? 1 2 3
by Marshall- 57 replies

My TV went out last night so I will be buying one this weekend...my price cap is around $1000.00. My question is what are the best tv's in terms of longevity and reliability....LCD, LED, or plasma? I've heard that plasma's go out rather quickly, any truth to this? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi all. As the title, is there an upscaling DVD player that plays xvid/.avi & divx files? I am based in the UK so I assume that I am right in saying that it should be Region 2. Thanks.

Which Sony TV from Amazon?
by Kerm- 1 reply
- 1.5k views
I have a 37" Panasonic Plasma, which I adore. Always alittle hesitant to go for a 'smearCD' or LCD to everyone else. But with Amazon's black friday thang on next week my mum is after a 37" and 50% off it too good to miss. Which Sony would you go for? I'm trying to tell the difference between the 3 on there other than the WiFi connections, anyone have any experience with any of them? Can't seem to find contrast ratios or response times or any important data like that. Cheapest - ?440 Mid Range - ?540 Most Expensive - ?580 Cheers guys.

PC to home theatre

Hello, I would like to output music played from my laptop and have it play through the home theater system in my room. The problem is, the system I have is several years old and does not have an hdmi input (which would make my problem super easy to solve). The only outputs I can see in my laptop (for audio) would be an hdmi port and a regular headphone jack (as if I were to listen through headphones) The home theater system I would like to hook my laptop to only has a digital coaxial in, and then just plain old composite cable inputs... other than that I am stuck to listening to the radio (or playing cds/dvd's) I originally used it with my tv when watching movies etc…

Surround Sound Bar
by +longgonebn- 1 reply

I am looking to get 2 separate surround sound bars. One for my HDTV and one for my computer. Now before you say anything, yes I know it's no where near the quality and experience of actually having those 5.1 and 7.1 speaker systems. I get that. What is the best options for a $400 or less system (each of course). And are there any made for PC's, or what are the ones that can work with a PC? Suggestions, ideas? I found this one http://tinyurl.com/36fzvy3 which seems to be the more popular one for PCs. Are there better out there for PCs. Thanks. * also needs to work with music which has base, sound good enough. Read some reviews on some that said they basically don't wo…

HTPC Build Feedback
by Shannon- 3 replies

I don't know if this belongs here or in the hardware discussion forum, so please move it if so. Anyway I've decided to build a small HTPC purely for video playback (zero gaming). I also want to use the HTPC as a wireless file server. That is, I want to store all the videos and a bunch of other files on the HTPC, and still be able to access them over the wifi on my desktop. So basically I need: - 1080p playback - XBMC - Wireless N - Ultra-low power (will be left on 24/7) - HDMI output - Quiet (it will be in my room after all) I've picked the following parts, and I was just after some feedback/suggestions: - Zotac IONITX-F-E - Antec ISK300-65 -Mini-ITX case - G.Sk…

[UK] Finding a new Television
by JMann- 11 replies

Hi everyone, My old 26" LCD TV is slowly dying, so I am going to take the jump and upgrade but since my last purchase, things have changed a lot! I've read some threads in this forum, and LED seems to be the way to go with my budget which is between ?500 - ?600 - would you agree? Is LED better than LCD now? I've written up a small list of requirements that I am keen to have on the new TV, like 32" / Freeview HD / 1080p / Internet Enabled if possible. So on that basis I had a look on Amazon, and found a Samsung and LG which I thought looked decent: LG-32LE5900 Samsung-UE32C5100 I then went in to some shops, and managed to look at the Samsung which was nice but I could…

I think Blu-ray is a great format and I really love it. But I had a very bad experience when I bought my first player, which was the Samsung BD-P1600. I heard that Samsung is notorious for having several compatibility issues with several BD titles. So, I replaced it with a Sony BDP-S360 and it's been working great for me for about 4 months now with no problems. But after doing some researching, it looks like many other players (besides Samsung) have problems. LG has some issues, I heard. My friend even owns a Sharp BD player and has freezing problems on a few movies. Even many players (mainly the Pioneer ones) had issues with playing "Avatar" and they needed firmware upda…

Does anyone own a Vizio HDTV? I'm currently looking at this 37" HDTV and it seems pretty fairly priced, but I want to know if that is because of a defect, not great quality, or just because of the brand etc. Any reviews or comments or things you notice would be great. I'm not really well versed in TV purchasing...

Best Set-top Box Options
by +longgonebn- 8 replies
- 3.1k views
For quite sometime now I have been streaming all my content to my PS3 with PS3 Media server. Though it's just not updated often enough anymore, and there are always issues with it. And never enjoyed using Windows Media Center with the Xbox. So, I am thinking about buying a box that will steam all my content, store content (either internal drive, or external) and has web related stuff. The obvious things. I don't really feel like building my own HTPC so only pre made boxes please. Boxee Box isn't available yet, but if you think it's worth waiting then say so. Otherwise don't mention it. Also, not sure if any of the set-top boxes are US only, so if it does matter I am in…

I am looking for a set top box media player that has built in torrent client and wifi capable. I do not want a console or a HTPC, but a quiet 24/7 box that will sit next to my TV. I was looking at WDTV Live, but was wandering is there anything better and newer in around the same price category. Looking to spend around 150 EUR.

How to share sound through LAN?
by aidin- 3 replies
Hi, I have been having this problem for a while and no one seems to understand it and even if they do they do there doesn't seem to be any good solutions. So what I want is: At home we have 3 sets of computers in different rooms. Each of the computers are connected to their own set of speakers. And all of the computers are connected to the same LAN network. Now we are going to have a party so we want all the speakers to play the same output sound. For example: Computer A will be the master. Computer B and C will be "connected" to computer A in some way. Computer A plays a sound, any sound from any source. Now I want this sound to play in all computers speakers at th…

Didnt see anyone else posting this here so I figured I would post, just got my confirmation that my Apple TV (newest) is shipped out of China. Kind of excited to see how this new "diskless" Apple TV will work, and if it will bring other networks to their senses about how rentals are actually a way to bring in people like me who would rather download than pay a higher price to "own" the episode so to speak. Sep 28, 2010 8:02 AM Picked up SHENZHEN CN Arriving October 1st.

Blu-ray, HDMI and AV Receiver
by WV2MJR- 2 replies
- 1.8k views
I recently purchased a 27 1080i HDTV and a Blu Ray Player. Last night there was a lightening storm which caused a power surge. The HDMI output on my Blu Ray player no longer works. However, the AV connectors (wires) do work. It has been over 30 days which means I can not RMA for repairs. My question is, am I going to notice a big performance difference using AV output verse HDMI output or I shouldnt be too concerned. My Blu Ray player and TV are both High Def so do the wiring (HDMI, AV) really make a difference? Since the HDMI output is no longer working and I have to use the AV output, does this make my HD into SD?
