With the seventh season of Game of Thrones coming to an end this week after numerous leaks, new rumors have begun to swirl surrounding a game based on the epic fantasy franchise. According to a new product listing page, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim developer Bethesda might have something up its sleeves for fans of the series.
Spotted by users on NeoGaf, a new product page has appeared on the Target website simply stating 'Bethesda: Game of Thrones'. This has spawned speculation to the umpteenth degree, with fans of both Bethesda and Game of Thrones being torn on the issue. Last year, Fallout 4 was released and didn't set the world on fire with either its visuals or storytelling, with fans - based on the responses in the forum - fearing that the rumored foray into the novels of George R.R Martin might end up having a similar fate.
It's not the first time that the books have been adapted into games. Most famously, Telltale Games released a point-and-click adventure game based on the award-winning series and was received with critical acclaim. However, it did not focus on the main narrative as seen in the TV adaptation, taking gamers on a different path in the world based on several other unknown characters.
Publisher Focus Home Interactive - which is set to launch a game based on the neo-gothic novellas written by H.P Lovecraft, named Call of Cthulhu later this year - has also launched an RPG title simply named Game of Thrones - set within this fantasy narrative - to mostly positive reviews back in 2012.
One has to note, however, that the page does not tag the so-called product as a game, and as such has to be taken with a pinch of salt. It's not the first time that products have appeared on store listings never to actually go on sale. The most recent of which was the mythical Xbox One release of Crash Bandicoot: N-sane Trilogy.
Bethesda has noted that it is working on at least five projects outside of The Elder Scrolls series, including a free-to-play game, and this could be part of its upcoming schedule.
Update: A Target spokesperson told Forbes that the listed product is not real, and apologized for the confusion.
