Here's what's new in OneDrive for the month of August

With the month of August behind us, Microsoft has shared some of the updates it has made to OneDrive over the past month. There are a few new capabilities worth mentioning, starting with the ability to comment on non-Office files. Typically, users can leave comments in Office files as a means for collaboration, and now that's possible with any kind of file.

Another new addition is a Popular Around Me section in Shared with Me. This new section surfaces files that are being commonly accessed and used by people you work with so that it's easier to stay on top of what's happening. Naturally, only files you have permission to access will be shown.

Other updates include the ability to share direct links to specific files in a PowerPoint presentation on the web. The OneDrive sync client now supports Windows Server 2019 with Files On-Demand, so if you're running it inside a virtual machine, you can now save space and speed up the initial sync process.

Not mentioned in the notes, but listed on the roadmap page as rolling out this month, are the Time to Read and Inside Look features. These let you see how long it may take you to read a document and view key points inside it without having to open it.

Last week, Microsoft had already shared what's new in other Microsoft 365 products in August. You can read that here, if you missed it.
