Tag Heuer and Intel launch the $1,600 Connected Modular 45 smartwatch, with Android Wear 2.0

Intel and Tag Heuer have just announced the launch of a new modular smartwatch, based on Android Wear 2.0. The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 device, will come with a hefty price tag.

Back in February, rumors started swirling that Tag Heuer was looking for a follow-up device to its 2015 model. Flash forward to today and the company’s collaboration with Intel has officially come to light in the form of the Connected Modular 45 smartwatch.

What sets this new device apart from the rest of the market is its modularity. Virtually every single component of the device can be swapped out for a different option, leading to numerous combinations and styles, as long as your wallet can afford them. Up to 500 style choices are reportedly available, with users being able to buy different modules, horns, bracelets and buckles, as well as 30 watch dial options. But if that’s not enough, customers can actually buy a mechanical watch module. That would seem to sort of negate the idea of a smartwatch, but to each their own.

In terms of specifications, this is what the Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 offers:

  • 1.39” AMOLED touchscreen display
  • Intel® Atom™ Z34XX processor
  • 5 sapphire cover glass and durable titanium case
  • More than a day of power
  • 4GB of memory
  • Water resistance to 5ATM
  • Support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and Near Field Communications including Tap to Pay

The device also comes with a sort of digital assistant from Intel, which is separate from Google’s own Assistant that comes in Android Wear 2.0. Intel’s system brings “a new experience of time” which can tell you if you’re late to the next meeting and hurry you on your way. The digital assistant will reportedly know what you’re doing at that particular moment, not just read your calendar and go off the time of day like most other systems do. It’s still a bit of a mysterious addition that won’t be there from the very start, but will come later according to Intel.

The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 will cost $1,600 and the device is available right now at the manufacturer’s website.
