The ability to sell games you purchase has been a great way for budget-minded gamers to continue playing the latest games without having to fork over a full $60 every time a new game comes out. Back in 2013, Microsoft experimented with the idea of sharing and possibly selling your digital games to other Xbox One owners, an idea that vanished quickly in the wake of Microsoft's PR nightmare for its newest flagship console. For those that feel like they're stuck with their digital content, there could be hope on the horizon for you.
Reported by a Reddit user, Microsoft has released a limited-run survey asking one simple question: would you be interested in trading your digitally-purchased games for a 10% credit?
The opportunity to sell back a digitally-acquired game is an interesting one. If you read through the responses to the Reddit post it sounds like there's a bit of a split on what people think of this idea. One popular line of thinking is that there's currently no sell back option for digital games, so having the option is better than nothing. Then there's the other side of the argument: 10% back for a game you may have paid $60 or more for is not a good deal, negating interest in the sell back option.
There's no denying that selling a game yourself or through a retailer is absolutely the best value right now. If you go through marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist, selling a physical disc can usually net you a large percentage of what you paid for a new/used game. It's common to see newly released games that retail for $60 get picked up by other buyers for $30-$50 within the first few months of a specific game's release. This doesn't mean that having an option for a digital buy back would be a bad one. It just may not be the deal you're looking for; however, if the future of game media is to be a digital one, then having a buy back option of some kind is very important.
