Over 2,000 Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 Unity apps submitted to stores

The Windows 8 sci-fi action RPG The Harvest was made using the Unity engine.

The Unity game development company has been highly supportive of Microsoft's Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox One platforms. In the past, the company has collaborated with Microsoft on contests and even offered free access to the Unity game engine for developers who create games for the Xbox One's ID@Xbox program.

This week, Unity announced on their official blog that over 2,000 games made with their tools have been released across both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, compared to over 1,000 games in November 2013. It also offered yet another incentive for creators to make titles for both operating systems using the Unity engine and tools. The details of the offer are covered on a separate page and developers who qualify can get quite a bit of free stuff.

There are actually two tiers of freebies for developers who get picked by Unity for the offer. Tier 1 includes a free Windows 8 Pro licence, a free developer hardware unit (either a phone or tablet) and a free Dev Center account for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Tier 2 contains all of the freebies from the first tier, plus an extra developer device, access to technical support, a 1 million ad impression package from AdDuplex and more.

The offer is open to any game developer who is using Unity 4 or above. They must have experience in shipping games and apps on mobile platforms. Also, Unity is looking for games that they feel are "innovative, interesting, and different from the other games and apps in its genre."
