Samsung to finally add OIS to A series smartphones starting with A72 in 2021

Electronics giant Samsung, which basically has a smartphone for every single segment you can possibly think of, is about to take a big step and go ahead with optically stabilized cameras for its mid-range A series of smartphones.

According to a report by TheElec (via SamMobile), Samsung will for the first time add OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) to the cameras on its A series smartphones, beginning with the successor to the Galaxy A71.

Optical Image Stabilization is a camera feature that basically lets you click sharper images in both daylight and low light shooting scenarios by stabilizing the camera module in the smartphone. So far, only Samsung’s Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note series of smartphones came with the feature, while its other smartphones used software-based camera stabilization.

Samsung recently launched its A51 and A71 smartphones in India.

The source points out that Samsung decided on adding OIS to its mid-range smartphones, starting with the A series because their flagship smartphones have hit their peak in terms of sales. The sales of the Galaxy S20 series were also severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. The sources close to the matter also pointed out that future flagship smartphones are not expected to do any better either.

The report also mentioned that major smartphone brands are looking at the mid-tier segment for growth. This includes Apple, which recently launched its affordable iPhone SE (2020) smartphone this year and even offered features like OIS and wireless charging at an accessible price.
