Apple announces watchOS 7 with Face Sharing, sleep tracking, and more

Today at WWDC, Apple introduced its latest updates that are coming this fall. Along with iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, the company showed off watchOS 7.

Watch faces are now going to be able to use more than one complication from an app. For example, you can use GlowBaby to track nap times, changing, and feeding times all at once. There's also a new complication configuration UI.

As usual, there are a few new watch faces, such as the minimal one you see above.

In Maps, there are new cycling routes. This is something that's also coming to iOS 14, but it makes sense on Apple Watch when you might not be carrying your phone.

Apple is adding new workouts, and the Activities app on iOS is getting a redesign. In fact, it's getting a new name too, as it will be called Fitness.

But perhaps this all buries the lede, which is that watchOS 7 is finally going to have sleep tracking. It's going to automatically track your sleep, and you can set a "gentle alarm" that will ease you into your day, showing you general information that will help you get started, such as battery life. It will keep track of trends, show sleep schedules, and so on.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, another feature that's on the way is help with hand-washing. Unlike how it works with Google's Wear OS though, this will happen automatically. It will detect the sound of running water, soap, and other things to know you're washing your hands.

If you stop before the 20-second timer is up, you'll get a reminder to keep going. Once you're done, you'll get a nice hardy "good job" notification.

As usual, watchOS 7 will ship this fall.
