New firmware updates rolling out to Lumia 550 and 650

Earlier this week, we reported that new firmware was available for some variants of the Microsoft Lumia 650 via the Windows Device Recovery Tool, which enables double-tap to wake. Today, users are reporting that the same update is rolling out over-the-air (OTA).

But that's not all. Lumia 550 users are getting firmware updates as well; however, it does not include the double-tap to wake feature, despite having the same version number. That version number should be 01078.00042.16352.500xx.

While the news from earlier this week was limited to a select few Lumia 650 models, it also seems that more devices can find the new firmware through the Windows Device Recovery Tool, and those variants will not be receiving the OTA today. Still, there seems to be a bit of good news for everyone here.

Other than double-tap to wake for the Lumia 650, we still don't know what else is included in the new firmware. Microsoft (unsurprisingly) has not updated its Lumia Firmware update history page. We've also reached out to the company to see if it can provide a changelog, so once we know more, we'll keep you informed.
