After keeping very quiet about its next flagship for quite a while, Sony appears to be officially teasing the rumored Xperia Z5, ahead of the upcoming IFA Berlin trade show next week. In a tweet made by Sony UK, the company is showing a blurry picture of a smartphone being used to capture the Brandenburg Gate, a very famous landmark of Berlin:
There’s not much we can tell from the picture, other than the fact that the smartphone appears to have a design similar to the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z4 (a design Sony calls “OmniBalance”). The Japanese company mentions that everything will become clear at IFA Berlin on September 2nd, which may indicate that the camera on the new device will feature the same ‘phase detection autofocus’ recently introduced with the Xperia M5 launch. We don’t know much else about the specifications of the new smartphone, but it's probably safe to assume that they'll be similar to the recently announced Xperia Z4v. Given the fact that the Xperia Z4 and Z3+ are only a few months old, it’s not clear whether Sony has made other notable improvements to make the Z5 a tempting upgrade (maybe less overheating?).
Sony is struggling in the smartphone market, which has prompted the Japanese company to look into new ways to monetize its mobile technology, such as launching commercial drone services in the near future.
