Call of Duty: Black Ops III is free for the next two days on Steam

Ahead of the official launch of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare - which has faced a harsh response and criticism from viewers of the game's cinematic and gameplay trailers - Activision has made a relatively more popular title, namely Call of Duty: Black Ops III, available for free on Steam for the weekend.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is set in a futuristic era, 40 years ahead of the events of Black Ops II. Advanced weaponry, robotics and supersoldiers play an important role in the title. It also features a "Zombies" storyline, which was released in episodic format as DLC, which focuses on a new set of characters portrayed by the likes of Jeff Goldblum, Neal McDonough, Ron Perlman and Heather Graham.

Even though Call of Duty: Black Ops III was received positively by critics, boasting "significantly" better sales than Advanced Warfare and Ghosts, it has mixed reviews on Steam. While many players have claimed it to be a decent game, others have criticized it for online multiplayer, saying that most of the time, gamers will be looking at the lobby screen waiting to find a match.

Regardless, Call of Duty: Black Ops III is available for free over the weekend, that is, until August 8th, 10 AM PT. If you decide to buy the game during this period, 50% will be knocked off the original price, bringing it down to $29.99. Similarly, if you purchase the Digital Deluxe edition - which includes the game itself as well as its season pass - during this time, you'll get 25% off. For players who already own the game, the developer is offering double XP in multiplayer, in addition to a free Starter Pack for the weekend.
