Google Duo gains captions support for recorded video and voice messages

Google today announced that it is bringing captions support in Duo for recorded video and voice messages. The feature is available for both iOS and Android versions of the app.

With captions support, all recorded voice or video messages that you receive on Duo will show a caption of what's being said at the bottom of the screen. This feature is different from Live Captions feature found on Google Pixels and other Android devices which can transcribe speech-to-text in real-time. The feature that's being rolled out in Duo today only works with recorded messages.

As Google notes in its announcement, captions support in Duo could be useful when trying to listen to a recorded message in a noisy place apart from it also being a great accessibility feature.

If you are a Google Duo user, you should see captions show up automatically for recorded messages on your device since this is a server-side rollout.
