Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 unboxing and first impressions

Dell refreshed its XPS 13 and XPS 13 2-in-1 in September, but the XPS 13 2-in-1 got some new design features. Notably, it got an IR camera next to the smaller webcam in the top bezel. The XPS 13 2-in-1 was the first to get a 16:10 display last year, getting part of the redesign that we saw from the rest of the XPS lineup last year. Now, there's complete continuity across the entire lineup.

The new Intel 11th-generation processors, codenamed Tiger Lake, are Intel's latest 10nm chips. While the CPU has been improved, a big part of the improvement is once again a focus on integrated graphics. With Ice Lake, Intel added its new Iris Plus Graphics, and now we're getting Iris Xe. The company is promising things like Full HD gaming without the need for dedicated graphics.

Tiger Lake also comes with Thunderbolt 4 support, and support for faster memory. In other words, it means that there are key performance improvements all around. With Thunderbolt 4, you can connect up to two 4K displays on a single port, or you can get 40Gbps data transfer speeds. While Thunderbolt 3 could do that, it has a minimum spec of half that, making it hard for consumers to actually know what they were buying. Now, you can be confident in what Thunderbolt 4 can do.

And of course, the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 comes with an InfinityEdge screen that comes in FHD+ and UHD+ variants, with the company sending me the former. Dell Cinema includes CinemaColor for HDR technology, CinemaSound for Waves MaxxAudio Pro, and CinemaStream for Killer Wireless data prioritization.
