Google releases first Android 11 Developer Preview for Android TV

Google today released the first Android 11 Developer Preview for Android TV. The release comes with privacy, performance, and connectivity focused improvements. As the name suggests, the release is primarily targeted towards developers, and the image that's being released by Google today is meant for ADT-3 developer devices only. This means that if you have any other Android TV or a streaming box running Android TV, you cannot install this Developer Preview on it.

If you have the ADT-3 developer device, note that you cannot downgrade it back to Android 10 once you install the Android 11 build of Android TV on it. The process will also wipe your entire device clean of all data.

The installation steps can be found below:

  • Download the system image (link) and unzip the file.
  • Plug in the ADT-3 developer kit for Android TV and enable Developer options.
  • Run flash-all.sh in the unzipped folder to perform manual system image installation to the ADT-3 device.

Google will be providing even more details about Android 11 for Android TV on August 10th as a part of its Android Beyond Phones week. The build released today contains some underlying changes and there are no user-facing changes or improvements.
