Minecraft reaches 200 million copies sold, monthly active players at 126 million

The block-based sandbox phenomenon that is Minecraft has managed to punch through another massive milestone, with Mojang Studios announcing 200 million Minecraft sales. Moreover, the game's monthly active player count is an impressive 126 million. The announcements arrive shortly after the developer went through a slight rebrand as part of the game's 11th-anniversary celebrations, changing from Mojang to Mojang Studios while unveiling a new logo.

"Though 2020 has been an incredibly challenging year, we’re proud that Minecraft continues to inspire and connect an ever-growing global community of passionate players and creators," said Mojang Studios studio head Helen Chiang. "None of this would have been possible without the support of our amazing community. Thank you!"

The blog post also went on to detail what the Microsoft-owned studio has accomplished in the past few months to help the community during these difficult times, such as making Minecraft: Education Edition free to educators, adding educational content into the base game, and partnering with United Nations Development Programme for a global PSA campaign regarding COVID-19 prevention, among others.

Mojang is currently in the process of bringing ray tracing to Minecraft through a partnership with Nvidia, and is also working on other experiences such as the mobile AR game Minecraft Earth, and the upcoming multi-platform ARPG Minecraft Dungeons that lands on May 26.
