Microsoft launches Open AI Energy Initiative in partnership with Shell, C3 AI, others

Over the past few years, Microsoft has been consistently investing in artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. Its AI model recently outperformed humans in natural language understanding, the firm teamed up with Code.org to teach students how AI works, and it also partnered with Qualcomm to enhance the AI and ML developer experience, among many other things. Now, the Redmond tech company has launched the Open AI Energy Initiative in collaboration with multiple other firms.

The Open AI Energy Initiative (OAI) is driven by Microsoft, Shell, C3 AI, and Baker Hughes. It is essentially an ecosystem comprising of AI solutions for the energy industry. It enables firms involved in the energy sector to offer and utilize AI solutions for various purposes such as diagnostics and monitoring. These will be designed to be scalable and interoperable, and will also offer an end-to-end support ecosystem. The OAI will be powered by Microsoft Azure and the BHC3 AI Suite.

Microsoft Vice President of Energy Darryl Willis had the following to say about the collaboration:

Microsoft is committed to the transformation of the energy sector and supporting solutions like the Open AI Energy Initiative, which are contributing to the realization of these transformation goals. Digital technology is helping key industry areas such as plant reliability and maintenance, and Microsoft’s participation in the Open AI Energy Initiative will further advance the transition to a net-zero emissions future.

The first solutions that are available as a part of this initiative are developed by Shell and Bakers Hughes, and are focused on the improving the reliability and performance of energy assets.

The OAI is also designed to support and enhance existing solutions available in the BHC3 suite of applications by AI technology driven by partners. Specifically, the OAI will focus on augmenting the following BHC3 applications:

  • BHC3 Reliability
  • BHC3 Production Optimization
  • BHC3 Inventory Optimization
