Skype now lets you join video conferences from a link, with no account

The newest versions of Skype for Windows, Skype for Mac, and Skype for Web now allow users to generate a unique link to send to their friends, allowing anyone to join their Skype conversation from the web or their mobile device, with or without an account. This feature has been brought over from Skype for Business, formerly Lync, and is crucial for getting video conference calls started painlessly.

The unique link generation, which is currently limited to the US and the UK, will be expanding quickly. In the next “couple of weeks”, the meeting service will be rolling out to the rest of the world, as well as bringing mobile app updates which will let you start meetings from iPhone, iPad and Android as well as join them. There is no mention of Skype for Windows Mobile.

Although not mentioned by the Skype team, the feature works at least sporadically in Canada, and to start a conversation simply click the + New button above the contact list and share the https://join.skype.com link from that window. Each link is unique to each user, and it is unclear how or if to change it.
