Porn sites aren't exactly the guardians of your privacy, but there's a first for everything it seems. The US Senate shockingly voted to overturn the FCC's privacy rules that stopped Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from selling their customers' personal information. The bill was further passed by the US House of Representatives. Now, major adult entertainment sites including Pornhub and YouPorn are defaulting to HTTPS encryption to make it harder for ISPs to access your data.
Privacy has always been an issue with porn sites and evidently, that's not what its users desire. Pornhub, one of the most visited sites in the world, claims to have 70 million daily visitors and adds that their confidentiality remains its priority. With this addition, the site becomes one of the three adult sites (including Redtube) to have HTTPS encryption.
Corey Price, Vice President at Pornhub, explained:
“With the switch to HTTPS we are able to protect their identity as well as safeguard them against exposure to malware by third parties. With this Internet communication protocol we can ensure not only the security of our platform, but also that of our users."
Its sister site YouPorn, which is also making the move, echoes the sentiment. Brad Burns, Vice President of YouPorn, declared that the encryption "will go a long way in solidifying our users’ privacy and protecting them against various types of malware" and added that it will allow the users to "peruse our site even more safely".
The sites have also launched bug bounty programs through HackerOne to boost the safety and security of their online visitors. Thanks to their help, contributors to the program can be paid as much as $20,000.
