Here's why you didn't get Windows 10 Mobile build 10136, despite being an Insider

As you may have seen yesterday, Microsoft finally put out a new Windows 10 Mobile build, but for those still on build 10080, it was not offered as an upgrade option in the Fast ring, which may be resulting in a moment of confusion for Windows Mobile Insiders.

The problem revolved around an issue with upgrading from build 10080 to 10136, and the new version was therefore blocked from being offered to those users using the older preview.

The only supported path to get this build, is from Windows Phone 8.1, meaning those on build 10080 will need to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool to reset back to 8.1 and then enroll to the Windows Insider program (Fast ring) again through the store app to be offered this newer build.

Although Microsoft has stated that build 10136 has 'thousands of improvements" compared to build 10080, it is not without issues, one in particular that is apparent right after installing:

At the end of the upgrade the Lock screen will appear frozen without the date and time for up to 10 minutes. Please be patient and let it sit – eventually the date and time will appear and it will allow you to unlock your phone. There is a post-upgrade migration status screen missing, which normally would show you that it was making progress. If you get impatient and restart or mess with locking/unlocking your phone, you’ll wind up in a funky state – so just relax and let it do its thing.

But all is not lost, if you don't feel like resetting back to 8.1 from build 10080 and simply don't mind waiting a bit longer, Gabe Aul has stated that build 10145 is being tested internally on the OSG (Operating Systems Group) Fast ring and looks like a good candidate to be pushed out soon, which will allow upgrading from 10080 (and the current 10136 build).

Although there's no indication as to when this will happen, we're sure it won't be too long, provided the testing does not result in any nasty bugs cropping up. For those waiting, or not interested in installing the preview builds, we have you covered with a gallery of the new build right here.
