Nest has announced the introduction of two-factor authentication (2FA) across its apps today, adding a welcome layer of security to the company's product range.
2FA isn't a new security measure by any means; many, perhaps even most, of us use it on at least one of our digital services as an extra layer of protection to prevent unauthorized access to our accounts and personal information. You might well have expected such a simple tool to be a standard feature on a service like Nest - whose products include home security cameras and thermostats - but better late than never.
The new 2FA feature is optional, requiring users to manually activate it on their accounts, rather than being prompted to do so. Nest explained:
To turn on two-factor authentication, go to the Nest app, tap the menu icon on the top left, then go to the category Account Security. You’ll see an option there to activate “2-step verification.” After you’ve turned it on, you’ll need to sign in again. It takes a minute or two for our customers, but for hackers working from computers all over the world, things get a whole lot harder.
Nest added that it is "constantly tweaking and adjusting how we protect your data, as new technologies become available or we learn about new threats." The company did not explain why it's taken so long to add such a basic security feature to its accounts until now.
