Possible Kinect-based Gears of War game cancelled

Epic Games' three Gears of War third person sci-fi shooter games were huge hits for both the developer and for Microsoft, which had exclusive publishing rights to those titles for the Xbox 360 (the first game was also released for the PC). However, in 2011, some rumors popped up on the internet that suggested a spin-off title, Gears of War: Exile, was in development.

Now, GameSpot is reporting that Epic Games' lead designer, Cliff Bleszinski, has confirmed the past existence of Gears of War: Exile. We say "past" because he also confirmed that the game was later cancelled. Bleszinski offered no other details on the game nor the reason why development was stopped.

Last year, rumors claimed that Gears of War: Exile was being made as an exclusive for the Xbox 360's Kinect motion gesture controller. Those same rumors claimed it would be an "on rails" shooter experience, meaning that the player would have little to no control over the movement of the player character.

As we reported earlier, Epic Games has confirmed that it is currently developing a PC exclusive game. However, no other information about that upcoming game has been revealed. It is also developing Fortnite, the rather quirky looking strategy-action game that Epic announced last December.
