Sony says it's sold over 40 million PlayStation 4s - up by 10 million in six months

Six months ago, almost to the day, Sony revealed that it had sold over 30 million of its PlayStation 4 consoles. Today, that official sales figure has increased considerably.

The company has announced that it has sold more than 40 million units, an increase of 10 million - or roughly 33% - in the last six months alone. The PlayStation 4 is now on sale in 124 markets around the world, and Sony is expected to introduce a more powerful version - nicknamed the 'PS4.5' - with support for virtual reality and 4K resolution in the coming months.

It's no secret that the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One - and regularly continues to do so - but given that Microsoft no longer provides official updates on its console sales, it's not exactly clear by how much.

Microsoft now says that it no longer favors reporting Xbox sales figures, because it considers 'Monthly Active Users' to be a more relevant metric.
