Surface Book 3 gets storage stability improvements in the latest firmware

Microsoft has released new firmware for the third-gen Surface Book 3 announced in May 2020. Like most firmware updates for Surface devices, the April 2022 update for the Surface Book 3 contains under-the-hood updates only. According to the official changelog, this release improves the overall storage stability.


Important: Unlike Windows updates, you cannot uninstall Surface firmware updates. Therefore, we recommend checking a list of known issues and additional notes before installing a new version.

Surface Firmware - 6.40.139.0 Surface Storage Firmware Update – Firmware

You can install the latest firmware on all Surface Book 3 variants that run Windows 10 version 1903 (May 2019 Update) and higher. It is available via Windows Update or the official Surface Support website.

Microsoft plans to provide Surface Book 3 owners with firmware updates until May 26, 2024. Note that this does not apply to Windows updates, and your Surface device might keep getting Windows updates and new features even after reaching its end of life.
