While the bulk of Microsoft’s efforts going into the upcoming Windows 11, it is still working away on the next feature update to Windows 10. Today, the firm shared that the 21H2 update will introduce several new features including WPA3 H2E support, simplified passwordless deployments with Windows Hello for Business, and GPU compute support in Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Azure IoT Edge for Linux on Windows (EFLOW) deployments.
As Windows 11 will not be supported on all Windows 10 computers, the 21H2 and subsequent releases will be important for people who stick with Windows 10 in the coming years. As such, Microsoft is ensuring that this update will install quickly on any Windows 10 system running version 2004 or later and is ensuring that it’s serviced for 18 months on Home and Pro editions of Windows while Enterprise and Education editions will be supported for 30 months.
In addition, the next version of Windows 10 Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) will be released around the same time as 21H2 and will provide updates for five years. This will be handy for those who don’t want to upgrade computers very regularly.
Microsoft has now started rolling out 21H2 builds to Windows Insiders who were moved to the Release Preview channel from the Beta channel because their system didn’t meet the Windows 11 system requirements. After these users have supplied Microsoft with feedback about the update, it will begin rolling out to the general public in the second half of this calendar year.
