New activations for iOS and Android phones break records

Did you get a new smartphone for Christmas? If so, a new report says you are not alone. The research firm Flurry reported this week on its blog site that 6.8 million new Android and iOS-based smartphones were activated just on Christmas Day. Flurry says it is able to detect nearly 100 percent of all user activations for these operating systems due to over 140,000 apps using its Flurry Analytics program.

The blog states that the massive number of new phones being activated on Christmas Day is a 140 percent increase compared to the previous record, set on Christmas Day 2010 with 2.8 million device activations. The new Christmas Day 2011 record is also a 353 percent increase compared to between 1.3 and 1.5 million daily device activations for December 1-20, 2011.

And what about app downloads for all those new phones? Flurry states that on Christmas Day 2011, 242 million apps were downloaded for iOS and Android-based phones. The report claims that number is over double the number of apps downloaded compared to any other single day in the history of iOS and Android products. The one exception is Christmas Eve 2011, which Flurry says saw 150 million app downloads. The company expects that 1 billion app downloads will be made between Christmas 2011 and New Year's Day 2012 for those two platforms.
