Samsung is set to reveal a new device in the "premium Galaxy lineup," likely to be the Galaxy Note9, at its “Unpacked” event on 9th August with a potential announcement of a smart speaker running Bixby 2.0. There have been a bunch of rumors surrounding the Note9 already with claims ranging from it having a new rear design to new S Pen features, and more.
As per a report by The Bell, the Korean tech company might also be considering merging its Galaxy S and Galaxy Note line-up into one single segment of smartphones.
Although unconfirmed, the idea seems plausible considering the similarities between the two line-ups; the Galaxy S Plus devices come very close to their Note brethren when you compare the form and look.
The report also states that the topic of unifying both of these flagship platforms has been an active discussion point within the company internally aswell as with its partners.
There are already talks about Samsung introducing a smartphone with a foldable display next year during CES 2019. This can be part of what the company might be planning for its future line of smartphones and a unified Galaxy smartphone could be a stepping stone in that direction.
An English translation of a statement made by a Samsung representative claims:
“Foldable smartphones, which are expected to be released early next year, are a part of pilot programs, but they will emerge as the main line-up at least the following year. The decision to unify the S Plus and Note products will depend on the kind of response that Galaxy Note9 receives from the customers."
The unification of the Galaxy S and Note line-ups should still be considered as a rumor, even if the idea may make sense at a lot of levels.
