Earlier this year, it emerged that Apple was developing its first original TV show, and that it would focus on the 'app economy'. Now, the show has a name, and the company is looking for developers wishing to take part.
Planet of the Apps is an unscripted reality series, which Apple is developing with production company Propagate. Music star Will.i.am is also involved in some capacity.
The show's website describes it as "a groundbreaking new series about apps and their creators". But it also claims that "Planet of the Apps isn’t just a show, it’s a launch pad and accelerator for exceptional developers", adding:
Those accepted will have a chance to receive:
- Mentorship: Hands-on guidance from some of the world’s best experts in tech and entertainment.
- Funding: Those who make it to the final round will meet with top-tier VCs investing up to $10m over the course of the season.
- Marketing and Promotion: Featured placement in the App Store at the end of the show. Also, the potential to reach millions of viewers around the world on Apple platforms.
Propagate has opened a casting call inviting developers to participate - but only 100 will be selected to do so. It says that the series "will give app creators the chance to break through and share their ideas with the world. This is an exciting format that taps into what is driving culture today. We can't wait to see the groundbreaking ideas accepted for the show grow into viable businesses."
The first season of Planet of the Apps will be filmed in Los Angeles towards the end of the this year, and in early 2017.
Developers hoping to be featured will need to apply before August 26, 2016, and "must agree to have an iOS, macOS, tvOS or watchOS app in a beta or functional state by October 21". Applications will only be considered from legal residents of the US aged 18 or over.
