Microsoft starts selling the Alcatel IDOL 4S without a VR headset for $99

These days, Microsoft only has two Windows phone listings on its U.S. Store, as it's continuing to remove devices that are powered by its struggling platform. You might be surprised though, to find that a new listing popped up today. You can now purchase the Alcatel IDOL 4S without the bundled virtual reality headset.

The handset was originally launched in November 2016, and there hasn't been a new Windows 10 Mobile flagship since then. It uses a Snapdragon 820 chipset, and comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. The 1080p AMOLED display was previously enhanced by a VR headset that came bundled with it, but now you can get the device even cheaper.

Right now, you can get the IDOL 4S with the bundled headset for just $170, but without it, it will only cost you $99.99. Even though it's a brand new listing, it's marked down from $299.99, and should remain that way until February 8. The model with the headset should return to its original price of $470 on January 20.

The loss of VR on a device like this won't be an issue for many consumers. There was minimal app support on Windows 10 Mobile for virtual reality, so all that's really left to do is to consume 360-degree photos and videos.
