Apple and Samsung are two brand names that roll off consumers' tongues more often than not these days, but there was a time when Palm dominated the mobile phone space, offering devices powered by its proprietary OS. Since that time, Palm has long been forgotten, only mentioned every now and then for the purpose of invoking nostalgia. But, if recent filings are any indication, a new Palm device could really be arriving sometime soon.
Despite being reported about a year ago that Palm devices would be making a comeback in 2018, sometimes, news like that is hard to believe, especially with the highly competitive smartphone market. But, it looks like things are actually progressing, with new Palm device filings that were discovered through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Wi-Fi Alliance websites. There isn't much information revealed, with much of it being obfuscated, but we do get a model number, the PVG100, and know that in its current form, it is running Android 8.1 Oreo and has support for the 2.4GHz band when it comes to Wi-Fi.
TCL, who purchased Palm from HP, has done well in the past when it comes to resurrecting brands. Despite BlackBerry struggling to remain relevant on its own, the brand has flourished under the wing of TCL, who purchased the global rights for the brand only a couple years ago. It's uncertain how popular a Palm device released in 2018 would be, but if any company could succeed, it would be TCL.
