Payday 2 VR beta is now available, supports cross-play with desktop players

Overkill Software announced in May that it was developing a virtual reality mode for Payday 2, and today the developer kicked off the new mode's very first beta. All Payday 2 owners on Steam has been given full access to the beta, which even allows cross-play between VR and desktop players, letting everyone heist together.

Interested players can opt-in by opening Payday 2's properties on Steam, selecting the Betas tab, and choosing the 'open_vr_beta' option from the drop-down menu. Note that desktop players who are interested in playing with VR players will need to download the beta version as well.

The developer warns that there will be art issues and other problems in this beta as this is a preliminary stability test, but it hopes to address the issues before the official launch. All the content available for players in the VR beta is listed below:

Levels:

  • Alaskan Deal
  • Art Gallery
  • Bank Heist (cash, gold, deposit, random)
  • Yacht Heist
  • Stealing Xmas
  • Diamond Store
  • Firestarter
  • First World Bank
  • Hoxton Breakout
  • Heat Street
  • Four Stores
  • Slaughterhouse

Weapons:

  • Assault Rifles
  • Shotguns
  • Akimbo
  • SMGs
  • Pistols
  • Throwables

More information regarding the VR mode can be found on the game's official Steam forums. The 'How to play' section for VR headset owners may be especially important for first-time players.

Payday 2 VR mode is slated to launch free of charge to all Payday 2 owners sometime in 2018.
