Samsung said to be working on a flip phone-style foldable smartphone

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung's Galaxy Fold has had a troublesome road so far, and to this day, there's no official date on when it will be available to buy - though rumors have pointed at a launch later this week. Despite the woes with its first foldable phone, Samsung is reportedly keen on exploring the concept further with a new phone coming next year.

A new report from Bloomberg claims that the company's next foldable phone will be significantly different from the Fold, however. For one thing, the inner display will be smaller - 6.7 inches rather than the 7.3-inch panel of the Galaxy Fold. More importantly, though, the phone won't fold quite in the same way, adopting a style similar to that of classic flip phones instead. Folding around a horizontal axis, the phone will be square-shaped when closed and look more like a regular smartphone when opened.

The phone is also said to sport an Infinity-O display to house the front-facing camera when the phone is open. On the back, there'll be a dual-camera setup, which also serves as a front-facing camera when the phone is folded shut.

While the phone is reportedly amongst Samsung's plans, whether or not it sees the light of day is dependent on the success of the Galaxy Fold, which is now open for pre-registration. After the problems that have afflicted the device, consumers may be reluctant to get on board with it, and some carriers have shown skepticism as well.
