The Switch became the fastest selling Nintendo console ever only a couple of days after its launch, and almost a year later, the portable device is still selling in droves. Nintendo revealed in its latest earnings report that 14.86 million Switch consoles have been sold by the end of December 2017, beating the 13.56 million lifetime units that its predecessor, the Wii U, sold before the end of its production last year.
7.23 million of those Switch sales were from the holiday quarter, making it Nintendo's most profitable quarter since 2009, back when the Wii was still making rounds.
The Switch has also done well on the software front, with Super Mario Odyssey taking the crown of being the most sold game on the platform with 9.07 million copies. In addition, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has shifted 7.33 million copies, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild bringing in 6.70 million, while Splatoon 2 is sitting at 4.91 million sales.
Looking to the future, the company stated it aims to "broaden the platform’s user base by continuing to introduce compelling new software in addition to the stable of popular titles that already have been released." The biggest new releases heading to the Switch in the coming months are the two Bayonetta re-launches in February, and Kirby Star Allies in March. The company is also slated to launch its Labo cardboard DIY kits to the Switch in April.
