You can pre-order Motorola's 5G Moto Mod starting tomorrow

Last summer at an event in Chicago, Motorola announced the Moto Z3, promising that it would be the first phone that's upgradeable to 5G. The company also unveiled the 5G Moto Mod, an accessory that snaps on the back of the device to provide 5G connectivity. Today, Motorola and Verizon finally announced availability details for the Moto Mod.

You'll be able to pre-order the 5G Moto Mod starting tomorrow, March 14, and Verizon has all kinds of deals lined up. There's a special right now where you can get one for just $50 ($349 retail), which is a solid price considering that the accessory has a Snapdragon 855 chipset, a Snapdragon X50 modem, and more. Verizon says that you can get unlimited 5G data for $10 a month.

There's something of a catch to that though, as Verizon also announced that its mobile 5G network will first launch in Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11. In other words,, if you're not in either of those cities, you're going to have to wait longer before you can get 5G at all.

“Continuing our track record of 5G ‘firsts,’ we are thrilled to bring the first 5G-upgradeable smartphone exclusively to Verizon customers," said Verizon’s chief technology officer, Kyle Malady. “Not all 5G networks are the same. Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network is built by the company with the nation’s best and most reliable 4G LTE network. It will change the way we live, work, learn and play, starting in Chicago and Minneapolis and rapidly expanding to more than 30 U.S. markets this year.”

Also, if you pre-order the 5G Moto Mod tomorrow, you can get a free Moto Z3 with a new line of service and the purchase of a Moto Z3, or if you upgrade your phone and opt for the $10 a month payment plan.
