Last fall, Microsoft announced that it's releasing a series of dual-screen devices, the Windows-powered Surface Neo and the Android-powered Surface Duo. The Surface Neo is delayed indefinitely, as Microsoft is struggling to get Windows 10X ready. However, the Surface Duo is arriving ahead of the original 'holiday 2020' release timeframe.
According to a report from Windows Central, the Surface Duo will begin shipping the week of August 24. That means that if the report is accurate, there's less than a month to go before the smartphone is released.
This would be a change of pace for Microsoft though. Typically, the company holds a Surface event where it unveils the product, and then a few weeks to a month later, you can order the product. The announcement in October was more of a tease, and the specs and price still haven't been announced. At the event, most journalists weren't even allowed to touch one.
Of course, a lot of the specs have leaked, and they're decidedly mid-range. It's expected to arrive with last year's Snapdragon 855 chipset, no 5G, 6GB RAM, 64GB storage, and a single-lens 11MP camera. It will have two 5.6-inch 1800x1350 screens.
The main reason that Surface Neo is delayed and Surface Duo isn't is because frankly, Duo is an easy device to make. It's an Android phone with a second screen, and Microsoft isn't even the first to do that. For the Surface Neo, the firm actually set some ambitious goals for its new Windows 10X OS, which it's building from the ground up.
