Paginated reports in Power BI can now be embedded in applications

In August, Microsoft introduced support for URL parameters with paginated reports in Power BI. Then, in the following month, the data visualization service received additional support for the Secure Embed capability. This essentially enabled developers to easily embed paginated Power BI reports in their internal portals, applications, and websites.

Now, further support for paginated reports has arrived in the form of a public preview for Power BI Embedded. With this, developers can now embed paginated reports into their own applications, with the design being termed the 'app owns data' model.

Independent software vendors and developers can utilize this feature to achieve faster marketing time without any additional development hassle. This is because pre-existing Power BI APIs and SDKs can help perform paginated report integration with ease. Development of visual analytics features can, therefore, be largely ignored, with highly formatted reports not requiring much effort on the developers' part. The fully integrated reports also provide users with the capability to interact with them, even if they do not have a Power BI license themselves.

For now, the following capabilities are being offered with the new feature:

  • Row-level security in embedded paginated reports
  • URL parameters in embedded paginated reports
  • Automation of paginated report tasks and operations

You can learn more about these at the original post, or get started with embedding paginated reports in your own applications by checking out the tutorial here.
